Welcome

Welcome to the home page of Tennis Seniors Northern Territory Incorporated (TSNT), the administrator of 30+ seniors tennis in the Territory.  It is a young association and has a lot it wants to achieve. Our Mission is to increase the playing opportunities and social interactions all year round for adult tennis players, of all standards and as a sport for life.

One of our key avenues is a regular social tennis program which is available to all adults.

The TSNT committee invites constructive comments and voluntary help at many levels. It is the active involvement of its members that makes the strength of an association.

Come join us on the tennis court!

Defibrillators for Top End Tennis

Updated 19 February - 2022

Defib

Defibrillators are becoming a welcome inclusion at tennis centers across Darwin and Palmerston.

A defibrillator is a device that uses electricity to re-start the heart or shock it back into its correct rhythm after someone has suffered a cardiac arrest.  A defibrillator can increase the chance of survival to over 70% if applied within the first few minutes.  These Devices have been designed for use by untrained persons with an automated voice talking the user through the process.

Bryan was able to fundraise for Gardens to get a defibrillator.  A worthy cause that was well supported by our members.  I would like to thank Bryan the Gardens Committee and those who supported the fundraising effort.  You efforts could save someone's life.

Tennis Seniors NT have also secured our own defibrillator which is now on loan to the Palmerston Tennis Club.  This defibrillator is provided by an NTG-community Benefit Grant & Tennis Seniors NT.  I would like to thank Neale, Paul and Bryan for their work in securing this AED.

It is also my understanding that Tennis NT now have Defibrillators for the Darwin International Tennis Centre at Marrara.  Given that TEMS already had a defibrillator this means that all centers have this life saving equipment.

Corona Virus

Updated 19 February - 2022

Corona Virus

Even though we are now living with COVID 19 it is still a nasty disease that continues to claim lives and be detrimental to health for many who survive it. Given that many of our members are amongst the most vulnerable it is well worth we stay vigilant and take some precautions to protect ourselves and our friends. There are a few things you can do:

  • Keep up-to-date with the latest corona virus advice and rules from the government web site https://coronavirus.nt.gov.au/
  • Be familiar with the commonly adopted protocols of play in relation to corona virus.  The “Full Guidelines: COVID 19 Guidelines for Play” on the COVID-19 Community Tennis Guidelines TNT page is a useful resource for this.
  • Be aware of the COVID 19 requirements at individual Centre's (they can vary greatly)
  • Promote COVID 19 safe practices.  Be upfront that you will be doing the racquet tap after the match.  Use your racquet to return other groups balls back to them.

Proposal for a Senior Friendly Centre for Darwin

Updated 2 May - 2022

SFAG

Tennis Seniors NT continue to advocate for SFAG courts.  Our aim is for SFAG courts to be a part of the plan for the development of Tennis in the NT.

There is substantive evidence that softer courts like SFAG reduce the wear and tear on joints and allow players to continue to play the sport they love for life. Jim Arthur has written a review promoting the benefits of Sand Filled Artificial Grass courts in tropical climates like Darwin. Syn Grass Tennis Courts.

To find out what Rafael thinks of it all read this excellent article "All that slipping and sliding on tennis courts prevents injuries: a biomechanics expert explains how"

Courts 1 & 2 at TEMS have an under layer of Rebound Ace and are currently the softest courts available in Darwin.

At the beginning of this year TSNT met with the CEO Tennis NT and the General Manager of Sports & Rec. to ascertain what could be done to establish some artificial grass courts in Darwin. TSNT was asked to write to the Gardens TC Management Committee inviting it to make a request to the Sports @ Rec for funds for a new masterplan for Gardens.  The outcome of this effort remains unclear.  A copy of the Submission. and the Response from Gardens is made available (just click on the blue text).
