Some thoughts from Ian Worland at Ali Bey,
Turkey in May 2007:
They walked from the bus at Ali Bey,
Full of confidence and Aussie spirit
Many not tested on the World battle front
They hit the red clay, many had not seen before
Advancing proudly behind the Aussie flag.
They fought ferociously as Aussies do to the death
Many a purple heart issued to the wounded
Both on the court or at the water slides.
Even during fierce battle the Aussies remembered
Their fallen allies who died on these soils, in the ANZAC
tradition of Gallipoli.
A moving commemorative Dawn Service held at the water’s edge
On the sands of Ali Bey at Belek and Manavgat, presided over by
our leaders Simon Arms and Wayne Pascoe, very respectful and
moving speeches.
Reserves were called up for the Second week, led by a multiple
medal-winning veteran known affectionately as "Lizzie" by her
comrades.
Many a medal was won, many a battle was lost, but friendships
between teams and other countries were built and maintained.
Exchanged gifts and the odd quiet drink after battle is a
tradition that hopefully will live on forever.
After two solid weeks reporting and suffering the same
hardships as the troops.
