Super Seniors play Super Tennis in New Zealand!

We are in FOUR finals, and are playing off for third in THREE. That’s SEVEN teams that reached the semi-finals. From NINE Cup contenders, that’s fantastic! Our other two teams came 4th and 5th. How good is that?

From 7 teams in the Queens’ Cup, our ‘young’ ladies came in 4th – a creditable performance.

Our W70s will face the USA team which is stacked with talent! Led by World #1, Dorothy Matthiessen, USA will make it a formidable task to gain supremacy. Nola Collins (at No 2) has not lost a match all week, so who knows? . . . With a little bit of luck?? Margaret Robinson, (at No 1) may do the trick, and the Doubles combo: Helen Ferris and Joyce Rogers, will be there all the way!

Unfortunately, Judy Hancy (Vic) from the W65s will be out for up to 6 weeks with a knee injury, maybe due to the hard courts they had to play on in Ashburton. The team with Linda Pengelly (also Vic), Helen Muir (WA) and Jill Taylor (QLD) can be proud of their efforts, as they were playing on a ‘foreign’ surface against some of the world’s best 65s.

Carol Campling will be disappointed for her team to be relegated to the 3rd/4th playoff, after a very close Doubles ‘decider’ which went to the Great Britain pair Sue Hill and Frances Maclennan (Carol’s partner for the Individuals.) They could have been in the Final, with just a tiny bit of luck.

Alan Walsh, (NSW) Captain of the M60s has selected his team well, keeping Terry Smith at No 1 and Phil Higgs at No 2 Singles. Both guys have risen to the challenge, with some sensational performances throughout the week! USA’s "powerhouse" (Beautyman, Cheney, Thomson and Parker) proved too strong in the Semis, but the team gave a creditable performance. (A couple of 7-5s and a 7-6 down.) Here’s hoping for a Bronze medal!

Terry Smith (Vic)

Our Britannia Cup boys, Bob Howes at #1, Bruce Burns #2, plus the former World Doubles Champs, Downie and French, have played fabulous tennis all week, winning every Rubber 3-0! They only have the "big ones" to beat (USA). The team of Drilling, Carter, Campbell and Hernando will have to really show some class to beat our guys. Get that GOLD fellas!

Bruce Burns (NSW) and Bob Howes (NSW)

Two teams that have won 3-0 all week will face off in the Jack Crawford Cup! That’s USA and our Australian team of Peter Froelich, Ian King, Tony Harkin (in his first World team) and Ray Woodforde (seasoned campaigner). They will be on Hagley Park’s Centre Court, and who knows? Australia – Go for the GOLD!

Peter Froelich (Qld)

Canada and USA will battle it out for the Bitsy Grant Cup – with Canada as favourites, led by World #1, Lorne Main. Our boys did well, coming in 5th, downing Sweden 2-1, and then having to defeat Great Britain, which they did, 2-1! New Zealand and Japan will play for the Bronze.

Doug Corbett’s Gardnar Mulloy team has fared very well, and will go for Gold against the favoured USA team of Franco, Nichols, Flater and Tully. Remember gentlemen, "the bigger they are the harder they fall"! Go get ‘em! Doug is well supported by Ward Hillier(Vic), Nev Halligan and Dick Wilson (both QLD). We are with you "all the way"!
