Aussie Stars are now
Sparkling in Gold!
Congratulations
to our sole Singles Winner in the World Championships, Elsie Crowe
from WA. Elsie defeated American, Rita Caputi-Price 4-6 6-1 6-2,
to collect her first World Championship crown, 80+! Sensational.
Elsie Crowe (WA)
Hans Adama van Scheltama #8 seed, ran out of winners against
Germany’s Peter Adrigan in the final of the M60s, giving Adrigan
his first taste of World Singles victory, 6-2 6-4. Bob Howes
(VIC), could not find the form he had in defeating the #1 seed,
and succumbed to the pressure of USA’s Fred Drilling, who won in
straight sets.
Herman Ahlers (USA), could not take the match from home town
favourite, Mose Harvey, who became the first-ever New Zealand
Singles Champion.
Defending
champion and favourite, Lorne Main (CAN) admitted to being "in the
zone" in his 6-0 6-2 drubbing of the Japanese Atsushi Miyagi to
take the M75s and his record-equalling 11th World
Singles title. In the Doubles Final – GOLD was the reward for Doug
Corbett (NSW) and Ward Hillier (VIC) against the top seeds, Graydon Nichols and Tony Franco! They thoroughly deserve their 3-6
7-5 6-2 win.

Australians are renowned for their Doubles prowess, and it was
obvious in the 65MD which featured two pairs of Aussies in the
Final. Tom Downie and Murray French (both VICs), former World
Doubles winners, prevailed against NSW pair, Bruce Burns (NSW) and
Rupert Rosemblum, 6-4 4-6 6-0.
Murray French (Vic) and Tom Downie (Vic)
Peter Froelich (QLD) partnered American, Gordon Davis to take
out the 70MD, after a struggle, 6-3 7-6 6-3. Another Aussie, Max
Byrne (TAS) was a winner in the 75s, with USA’s George McCabe to
defeat the top seeds from Canada, Lorne Main and Ken Sinclair, in
a resounding manner 6-4 6-4. A surprise win, think they’d
say. Well done, Max and George.
In the Women’s 60s, Carol Campling and her British friend,
Frances Maclennan made short work of the American/German
combination, Brenda Carter and Heidi Orth, 6-2 6-2. Sweet Victory!
Our
confidence paid off in the 70s when Nola Collins(Vic) and
Margaret
Robinson (WA) soundly defeated USA’s Roz King and Carol Wood in the
Final. Our "Golden Dream" came true! Fantastic!

Well, that’s IT. All over until next October when both Seniors and
Super Seniors assemble in Turkey for what is anticipated to be an
outstanding experience for all concerned.
Christchurch organisers can be proud of their presentation, the
International players are all singing your praises!
