This year proved to be a great success with the SA Team winning convincingly against both NSW & Victoria. (Full list of results attached)

The Individual tournament had extremely hot weather with many stoppages due to the heat, however the Wednesday and Thursday of the Teams’ event proved to be perfect condition on both days. NSW were undermanned this year mainly due to the World Seniors Championships that were being held in Perth at the same time. Unfortunately they were unable to field the 4 extra men for the Over 70’s age group and had to use other players in some instances. Next year all States hope to be able to field the 4 extra men over 70 & ladies over 65.

We must not let that detract from the outstanding performance from the SA Team.

The SA Ladies were very strong with Gill Scott, Natalia Irvine, Michelle Leydon and Wendy Butler            in the No 1 & 2 doubles –It is a long time since we have been able to have such strength in the top doubles. This enabled the other ladies to go down a couple of positions and have some well deserved wins. In fact in the match against Victoria –SA ladies won the normal doubles 16 sets to love –a feat I am sure we have never done before!

This year saw the ladies win 52 double sets and lost only 12 a great result. Well done Girls!

The SA Men also had a very strong team and did very well. We are very fortunate to have Australian players Rino Traforti and Andrew Schuelke at the top of the order along with Andrew Brewster and Trevor Reeves. The men all had good results winning 55 sets and losing only 25- this includes the extra 70’s men.

There were some excellent results by all players with most players only losing the odd set but only one player was able to win all sets played. She won the World Masters 60 Doubles title a couple of week ago, played in the Mildura Individuals and then the Tri State Teams and all this after a very bad fall a few weeks ago –Need I say more?? Well done Sue Hand! I don’t know how you do it??

Most players and friends attended a great night on the River Cruise on Wednesday night, with good food, good music and a lot of laughs! (Especially the girls' table??)

Special thanks to Sue Hand, Sandy Bryant and Sue McKelvie for organising the function, “from go to woe” for all States – Great job Girls!

The SA players (20) who stayed on for Thursday night had a BBQ and a few coldies back at the caravan park- a very relaxing night. Thanks to Sue McKelvie & David Fielden for all the catering and preparation. It was excellent as usual!

Special thanks also to Vada Osborn, Carol Delbridge and Pam Haupt for manning the Tournament desk everyday, announcing matches, taking and recording results. It was a job very well done and took the pressure off Dennis and myself.

There is an apology I must make to Victoria – I jokingly accused them of not returning the Pat & Max Phillips trophy from last year as I was sure we had not won it. Bert Faux was quick to follow up last year’s results and advise that we were the culprits in not returning it?? We had beaten the Vics last year after all. The Trophy has been found and next year we will have two to return.

Thanks to all the players who participated for SA. I hope you all had a great time and enjoyed the tennis and will all go again next year. You can bet the Vics and NSW will come back stronger than ever!
