Thursday Competition
We
are probably all experiencing some changes in what players
want from their tennis organisations and when they want to
play. This applies to both social and organised matches.
For some years now we have wondered what the preferences for
our players may be. Generally it seems to be for more
informal matches. Whatever the answer is, we must adjust to
swing with the changes.
It
is noticeable that the numbers are down in our Vets Tennis
and also with our Thursday games. We have also been
informed that the Ladies Branch of Tennis ACT is also
finding the number of players is down from previous days.
We
have decided that, so as to be able to offer a greater range
of games, that there is to be an arrangement with the Vets
and the Ladies Branch. We will all continue to play on
Thursdays, but we have organised our matches to be on
alternating weeks. This will mean that the ladies will be
able to play on almost every Thursday and increase the
entries and competition for our Vets matches.
Results of recent matches that we have been able to complete
are:-

September
Division 1 - Bob Kennedy 20, Tom Gowing and Peter Scadonie
17
Division 2 - Christa Tickle 23, JeanPiere LeFabvre, 13

Remember that we play for our ‘Tomato Tennis comp’ in March
next year. We know the Melbourne cup is past and the frosts
are over, so have you planted your champion tomatoes yet?

This report covers the period from 2
June to 18 August
during which no tournaments were played.
The last three
months have been very quiet. The two tournaments in June
were cancelled due to the weather and low numbers. With a
number of players leaving Canberra for winter a decision was
taken not to hold any tournaments in July and August but to
resume again in September.
This report covers the
period from 3 March to 19 May 2011.
During the last 3 months
we have had some great tennis with favourable weather for a
change, and all matches have been completed. All matches
are ranked and produce some competitive games.

Tomato Tennis
Our
special event this quarter was the ‘Tomato Tennis’.
I am sure we all grow some tomatoes at home and generally
fancy we grow sweeter and nicer ones than those from the
supermarket. So we have asked players to put their best to
the test. Maybe next year you may be challenged to enter?
To
make this a fun event we ask Ken Wills to call in the Golden
Oldies to join in the fun and enjoy a drink with other
former active players.
We
have many and varied categories, but the results showed keen
interest. ‘Biggest and Heaviest’ was won by Lyn Small;
‘Smallest’ by Dennis Appel; ‘Best original display’ by
Cheryl Driscal; ‘Best Political Display’ by Bob Thornton;
‘Best Display’ by John Salmon; and Tastiest by Dave Veness.
Ken Sharp Cup
At
the Tomato Tennis we also had the opportunity to present
this special cup to the player who had won the most points
from their personal best seven matches during the previous
year. We were pleased to have Moira Sharp with us to
present this trophy to Ralph Peters.
This report covers the period from
2 December 2010 to 24 February
2011 during
which only one tournament was played.
I am
sure we are all aware of the bad weather up north and
locally it has had its effects on all tennis players. It is
amazing how it has disrupted our Tournaments; it has rained
out all of our matches for the previous two months. Most
years we have seldom even had a rain delay during the whole
year.
We
Thursday players do not usually play our tournament in
January as most players are away on holidays over Christmas
and the New Year and also it is too hot.
The
result of our one match was:
24 February
Helen MacDuff F22 A10, Chris Norwood 21F A11
Both
take away a bottle of wine.
Our
next match will be on 17th March starting at
9.00am. This last date will be our annual fun event of
Tomato Tennis which we enjoy after we have played the match.
Here
we get the chance to show off our home grown tomatoes in as
many categories you can think of, biggest, smallest,
sweetest, tastiest, best bunch, best display etc. Why not
enter the Tournament and enjoy the day.
We
will also be presenting the Ken Sharp Cup. This cup is
awarded for the player with the best aggregate results for
the previous year.
It is also the time that we invite our old
friends and previous players to come along and have a drink
and a few nibbles, they may possibly tell some stories of
previous happenings. Some even bring along their home grown
tomatoes.
