Sunday Round Robin Competition
20 June 2010
It was a
beautiful afternoon for tennis but entries were a bit
disappointing. One division of 14 was awkward to
manage as there is no easy format. It resulted in one
pair sitting off each time. There was a 3 way tie for
the winner between John Chaloner, Leonie Southwell and
Rosemary Scrivener on 17 games, hotly pursued by four other
players on 16 games. We are looking at introducing
handicaps next tournament to prevent Leonie taking home the
big prize 3 times in a row.
23 May 2010 - Gunning
We were
lucky to have a beautiful day for our match against the
Gunning. Our hosts have a very attractive small club
with four excellent synthetic courts. The Gunning Club
catered very well for us with morning and afternoon tea and
a most enjoyable day's tennis was had by all. After
all players had played a minimum of 5 sets, there was a very
close finish to our tally at day's end. Lyn Robbins on
29 games was a close winner from Adrian Rogers from the
Gunning Club on 28 games.
The only
disappointing aspect of the day was a very poor response
from men players from Canberra seniors. This made it
quite difficult to arrange the format of play for the day.
If a greater interest by our male members is not shown in
any future planned matches, it would be difficult to justify
the effort involved in organising such visits.
16 May 2010
We had
only the one division which was disappointing for such a
beautiful day but there was some good tennis. Leonie
Southwell finished strongly to with 29 games to pip Pat
Moloney by one game after 5 sets of tennis. Bribes to play
dead were offered but clearly not sufficient as no lame
performances were noted. Leonie is featuring
prominently on the winner's list so perhaps here's a
challenge to some of our other regular players to topple her
next R/R in June.
21 March 2010
On a warm and muggy morning, but
ideal weather for tennis at the very pleasant Forrest Club,
we had a good roll-up of players but with one small problem,
an odd number of players. David Sprott called on one of his
big fan club at Forrest and we were very happy to have Mohan
Pridham join us to overcome that difficulty, but it meant a
late start and fewer sets played than normal. We hope to see
Mohan play with us again before too long
As usual, there was some hard
fought matches in our two divisions. In the first division,
there was a dead heat between Annette Cochrane and Colin
Lyons on 23 games closely followed by David Sprott on 21.
In the second group, Robert Pragt was victorious with 21
games, with Jocelyn Thompson only one game behind, while
Mohan was only one game away from the runner-up prize.
There will not be a round robin
tournament in April because of the Easter tournament, but we
will be in action again on the 16 May at 9.30am, when we
again hope for a healthy entry
21 February 2010
We had a very strong
roll-up of 22 players for the first tournament of 2010,
maybe something to do with the washout at Ulladulla. There
were two divisions and both closely contested. While it was
warm and muggy, most players found conditions agreeable.
The First Division resulted in a tie between May Howard and
a newcomer to our tournaments, Leonie Southwell on 26 games
for the five sets played. The Second Division was won by
John Mapley on 22 games (good to see John again after a long
absence), closely followed by John Howard on 21
games. Jocelyn Thompson was only one game further back. It
was clearly a good day for the Howard household
13 December 2009
We had an enjoyable
tournament to finish the year, followed by a tasty lunch
which Gail Jones capably organised and cooked. There was
only the one section with David Sprott being the winner and
Leo Geremia runner-up.
15 November 2009
In
fairly oppressive conditions at Lyneham, there were two
divisions and some good hard-fought tennis despite the heat.
A number of players commented that some shade cover between
courts would be greatly appreciated at this venue in the
summer months. In division one the winner was David
Sprott with 27 games and the runner-up Colin Lyons with 21
games. In division two, the winner was Charlie Modrak
with 22 games with Gail Jones and Catherine McLaughlin joint
runners-up with 19 games.
11 October 2009
There was
a very good roll up with 22 starters. The tournament
was played for the first time at the very attractive Forrest
Club in fine and pleasant conditions. Members enjoyed
some hard fought matches and the close results bore that
out. It was great to see some new faces and some of
our members who have not played for quite a while. It
was clearly a very popular venue with excellent facilities
and we hope to see big roll-ups like this more often.
The winner in the first division was May Howard with 27
games followed by David Coutts and John Greenup on 25 games.
In the second division Lyn Robbins won with 23 games closely
followed by Gary Buchanan on 22 games.
13 September 2009
In fine
but sometimes gusty weather we had an enjoyable September
tournament with some hard fought sets and a couple of new
faces who we hope to see along again soon. It was a little
disappointing that we did not have quite enough players for
2 divisions. Ros Balodis joined us and it was no surprise
that she was our winner on the day with 23 games. We
threatened to make her play left handed next time! Runner-up
was Colin Lyons on 20 games.
16 August 2009
Although the weather was very changeable
there were enough players for two divisions. In the first
division, the winner was Pat Moloney on 23 games very
closely followed by May Howard on 22 games. In the 2nd
division, the winner was Julie Burke on 18 games, followed
by Don Tucker on 16 games.
19 July
2009
Players
enjoyed nice sunny weather for a change. It was most
pleasing to see quite a few new players along with
Annette Cochran from Wagga. In
division 1 the winners were David Sprott and Colin Lyons tied with 20 games;
followed by Annette Cochrane with 19 games. In division 2 the winner was Don
Tucker with 28 games and the runner-up Allyson Gell with 26 games
