2011 Frank Thornton Player of the Year
Congratulations
to Narelle Raftery on winning this award - pictured receiving the award from Pat Moloney.
The award is given to the ACT member judged to have achieved notable tennis success over the past year. This award was first presented in 1981. It was given by Kath Thornton in memory of her husband.
Frank
Thornton was the inaugural Treasurer from 1970 to 1978 of
Tennis Seniors ACT which was then known as the Senior Branch
of the ACT Lawn Tennis Association. Frank also had a
major involvement in the establishment and running of
Lyneham. He organised and involved himself in many
working bees to ensure Lyneham was always kept neat and tidy
and in a presentable condition. The trophy has been awarded
30 times to 25 different members.
Narelle is a player who moved to Canberra at a very young age as
part of a family shift. She showed a lot of potential as a
junior in a couple of sports before settling on tennis. An
unfortunate injury then stopped her from reaching top junior
status. In fact injuries have continuously plagued her over
the years. However over this last year Narelle has decided
to give it a go and has:
·
came runner-up in the Australian championships in Newcastle
·
won our Easter tournament
·
came runner-up in the Queensland Championships
·
came runner-up in the NSW Championships
·
improved her Australian ranking to No 2
·
improved her ITF ranking from 71 to 10
·
gained selection in the Australian Team
·
was named as TACT's Senior Player of the year
·
has lost a lot of weight and is looking athletically fit.
2011 George Henshilwood Award
Congratulations to
Mary Gormly on winning this award - pictured receiving her award
from Pat Moloney.
The award is given to the member judged to have made a
significant contribution to ACT Seniors over the past year.
The award is made as a result of an endowment from the Henshilwood family in memory of their father.
George Henshilwood passed away in 2003
just short of his 90th birthday. George was
given a tennis racquet as a retirement gift at the age of
65. He then took up tennis and joined the veterans.
A couple of years later he became editor of the then Vetset
and carried out that task for 20 years. The quarterly
issues comprised at that time between 16 to 24 pages in a
booklet form. Every single word was handwritten by
George before going to the printer. He also served as
Assistant Secretary and contributed in many other ways to
seniors tennis.
Mary
has demonstrated the required attributes of a warm and
friendly manner for the work carried out. Also having the
organisations skills for assisting in the running of social
days, handling entries, withdrawals and cancellations;
and the important aspect of ensuring sufficient eats and
drinks for the after match discussions as well as the
running of raffles. She has assisted at the Easter
tournament and is the able and valuable assistant for the
running of the Sunday mixed tournaments.
