The Passing of Alison Ide (Feb 2, 2009)
Alison
Ide has finally lost her two-year battle with cancer.
Anyone who has been around Seniors Tennis for any length of time
will have heard of the sprightly but frail 70+ year old from the
ACT. She was a fantastic tennis player, administrator and
person. In the past 30 or so years, she has won numerous
national seniors doubles and mixed doubles titles, has been
Australian Veteran Tennis Player of the Year (1986), been
President of ACT Tennis Veterans/Seniors for many years, been
recognised nationally with an OAM (1997), been an Australian
Tennis Seniors Administrator of the Year (2000), been Secretary
of Australian Tennis Seniors (1998-2003), made a Life Member of
Australian Tennis Seniors (2003), and even as recently as 2006
won a World Doubles title in the 70+ age group.
A remarkable lady, Alison just loved her tennis and was still
having the odd hit in recent times despite her illness.
Her funeral will be held next Monday, Feb 9th at 1pm at Gold
Creek Chapel, O'Hanlon Drive, Nicholls, ACT. Afterwards,
there will refreshments across the road from the Chapel at
Federation.

Australian Tennis Seniors Awards - January 2009
At the recent Presentation Dinner following the Australian
Tennis Seniors Teams competition, awards were presented for both
the 2008 Player of the Year and the Administrator of the Year.
For his stellar performances throughout 2008 culminating in
becoming World Singles Champion in the 85+ age bracket, the
award for 2008 Tennis Seniors Player of the Year went to Neville
Halligan (Qld). Neville was not only recognised by
Australian Tennis Seniors, but also by the Australian Government
as he was included in the Australia Day Honours List, receiving
an OAM for his long term services to Seniors Tennis as both
player and administrator. Congratulations to Neville from
all Tennis Seniors.
For his long and esteemed work with Tennis Seniors in both South
Australia and at the National level, the award for 2008
Administrator of the year went to Brian Dew (SA). For those who
attended the recent Australian Championships in Adelaide, this
award would have been of little surprise. The resounding
success of these championships were a credit to Brian and his
team of volunteers.

Carl Anjou made Life Member of Tennis Seniors
Australia - January 2009
After many years of service to Australian Tennis Seniors, Carl
Anjou has decided it was his time to retire from the secretary
role. At the recent AGM in Adelaide, Carl was awarded life
membership of the organisation and a new secretary (Tom Hancy)
was elected. On behalf of Tennis Seniors, we thank Carl
for his many years of service and to wish him all the very best
in retirement. We also welcome Tom to the fold and would
like to warn him about the size of the shoes he will need to
fill. An
updated list of office bearers is now available.

Another successful Australia Tennis 35+ Seniors has been
completed and congratulations must go to South Australia for
their superb organisational effort. Robyn Castle has been
busy putting together a
full wrap-up of the
Championships and has collated the results of the
Individuals competition of the second week.
Carl Anjou has circulated an updated list of office bearers
of Tennis Seniors Australia and the associated Divisional
offices. Graeme Holloway (TAS President) and Noel Fraser
(NSW) have retired after a number of years of distinguished
service to their Divisional Associations and we would like to
thank them for their contribution. Replacing them, we
welcome the newly elected Presidents, Bill Cromer (TAS) and Enid
Besant-Ryan (NSW), and wish them all the best for the challenges
ahead.
Congratulations is also extended to Robyn Castle (TSA Publicity
Officer) as the newly elected Secretary for New South Wales.
Robyn replaces the stalwart Max Ward, who had filled that role
with great distinction for the past 14 years.
Sad things happen in three's
- December 2008
We are saddened to hear of the
recent passing of Yvonne Winter, Reg Summers and Alan Carroll.
Yvonne, a beautiful lady, was the
widow of our former Publicity officer, Kevin Winter. For those
wishing to attend, a service will be held at Sydney's Eastern
Suburbs Crematorium, South Chapel on Wednesday January 7 at
2.15pm. Afterwards friends will gather at Bonnie Doon Golf Club
for refreshments. Yvonne loved the place, and it was her choice
of venue for Kevin's gathering. Long-time friend Mavis Bailey
(who will travel from Tasmania) will be delivering the eulogy.
Reg Summers was a Life Member of
Tennis Seniors Australia and was an inaugural member of the
national “Vets” executive in 1970 when the original “Veterans
Lawn Tennis Club of Australia” was formed by the late John
Young. The first committee was John Young as President, Geoff
Brown, Colin Long and Adrian Quist were the Vice-Presidents and
Reg Summers elected as the Secretary/Treasurer. Reg remained as
secretary until 1981.
Alan
Carroll was a world class tennis player, a well respected
tennis coach with a centre near Lismore and, according to his
widow Lois, just lived for the game of tennis. In fact
Lois has penned a
tribute
to Alan's life and tennis exploits which should be of
interest to his friends in Seniors tennis.

Wrap-up of the Worlds in Turkey - Oct, Nov 2008

Many Australians featured in Semi Finals, under a
cloudless sky and in mild to warm temperatures. Club Ali Bey was
a picture, and the tennis we witnessed was worthy of greater
recognition, the 35Men’s in particular, was a display of such
power and accuracy as you would see in the “big time”.

week at the World Championships in Turkey...

Our Austria Cup team, Andrew Rae,
(winning his 5th Cup, in a row - 2 Fred Perry Cups (50s) and 3
Austria Cups (55s) Max Bates (4th in a row) and Russell Watts
(2nd) put it all together to win the “big one”. The Doubles
decider against the USA, produced some scintillating tennis, as
the Australians showed their legendary skills in doubles to seal
the win, 6-3, 6-1!
Our Gardnar Mulloy Cup (M80)
gentlemen, Doug Corbett, Ward Hillier, Neville Halligan and
Neale Hook defeated a very confident USA team with World #1
Graydon Nichols unable to subdue our Dougie! Doug is ranked #5,
but he played the game to beat the best. Ward went down to
Clement Hopp, and then after the Singles they both backed up
against a fresh American pair, Tony Franco and Jason Morton.
Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi! Oi! Oi!

The
supporters who ‘carried them over the line’, said it was
like a football match with all the cheering and yelling
“Go, Aussies, Go”! And the atmosphere was electric. (I
wish I’d been there!) It was down to a Doubles decider,
and the Aussies had to win the third set. They played
drop shots and lobs with superb control to have the
Americans wondering what to do next.
Ward and Doug, you
are the Best! |

Gail Bates needs your help in collating historical records
from the Australian Seniors Championships since they were first
conducted in Hobart in 1977. Over the past two
years, in somewhat of a labour of love, Gail has put together a
comprehensive booklet that lists winners, finalists, scores and
events for every national championship since 1977. The
results of her work to date can be
downloaded as a pdf file and she is asking for your help
to fill in any missing players and results. If anybody can help
in any way with corrections or additions, please email Gail on
